Product Junkie on Rehab

Category

Part of my 2018 focus points is to be extra frugal. I have been successful on the makeup-and-skincare front. I was supposed to do a no-buy but we all know that’s impossible.

2018 started with a strong urge to buy NARS Powermatte Liquid Lipstick. I was going to treat it as my last hurrah before I formally start my Low-Buy, but when I checked the testers at the store, the product in each had separated. Shaking the tube would probably be enough to fix the problem but I decided it’s not worth it. Good save, I guess.

Limited Destashing

In 2017, I let go of a lot of stuff and scaled down my makeup and skincare collection to about 50%. However, that led to feeling entitled to shop. This year, I decided not to be as aggressive with destashing. I became more mindful and critical of my purchases when I set my mind to thinking that whatever I buy, I should be able to keep until its dying breath.

I still let go of stuff when I feel miserable trying to use them up. I also sold a lot of backup skincare products I know I won’t finish before they expire.

Skin Genie Lip Tint

Makeup Purchases

In January, I bought 3 lip tints after seeing myself in the mirror looking pale at the gym. I atoned for that by letting go of 8 lip products. I am proud to say I’ve been makeup purchase-free since February. HUGE ACHIEVEMENT. Total spent – Less than Php 500 (USD 10)

Skincare Purchases 1st Qtr 2018

Skincare Purchases

I spent most of the 1st quarter battling skin asthma. I’m allergic to egg, chicken and seafood but I can’t keep myself from eating them. I bought Dove Dermaseries for Itchy Skin and Aveeno Oatmeal Body Wash. I also bought several soap bars for sensitive skin.

After I finished a sample of Biore Watery Essence SFP50+++, I bought COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF50+++. I also let go of Sunplay Sport UV Sunscreen SPF120++++ with Wet Skin Technology. I decided I’m done with everyday sunscreens that make my skin feel tight and dry.

Skincare Purchases 1st Qtr 2018

I also bought Whamisa Original Toner (not in the photo) after emptying Klairs Supple Preparation Toner, but after finishing up about a fourth of the former, I let it go. My face always turns red and I get some inflammation that goes away overnight. I didn’t break out from it but I don’t really know what damage (if any) it’s doing given the skin reaction. Better safe than sorry.

Other purchases are:

  • Retin A 0.05% Tretinoin to replace Retacnyl 0.05% Tretinoin (expired)
  • Purito Vitamin C Serum (with Niacinamide) to replace The Ordinary 30% Vitamin C in Silicone
  • Olay Age Protect 18g
  • CosRx Aloe Vera Oil-Free Moisture Cream (I bought this and Olay because I don’t have a moisturizer that doesn’t have any acids in it. I wasn’t supposed to get two moisturizers, Olay Age Protect was an all-time favorite but I forgot it has salicylic acid).

The proceeds of selling my skincare backups covered a significant amount of my skincare purchases. Total spent (estimate) – Php 4900 (USD 98)

Logging

In February I started logging new acquisitions, purges, and empties. It’s good to see the exact amount I spent and the net decrease in my makeup and skincare collection. I wish I had done this when the year started.

Plans for April + Rest of The Year

On top of what I normally set aside in my savings account, I’ll continue saving the same amount of money I spend for non-necessities. This self-imposed rule kept me from buying makeup the past 2 months. Example: I wanted to buy Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick which costs Php 2,850. Unless I have another Php 2,850 to put in the bank, I’m not allowed to buy it.

I’m also imposing a 1-in-2-out rule for makeup and skincare categories I have too much of (eg lipsticks and foundations). I know–ruthless.

I plan on doing this update monthly instead. I needed to do a lot of recollection for this post! HAHA.

I let go of a lot of beauty products this year and I should’ve documented them sooner. I believe it’s unrealistic to pan everything so I try to decide right way whether I’d let go of something or try to finish it.

Here’s the first five products I let go of this year:

Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Bronzer 02

Enjoyed using this a lot as a cheek “warmifier” and a blush topper. The finish and texture is very similar to MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural but sheerer. This bronzer gives a subtle glow to the skin. Shade 02 doesn’t look orange and is 1 to 2 shades darker than my skin tone. It doesn’t highlight my pores but it doesn’t diffuse them either.

I let this go not because it’s bad. A friend needed a bronzer so I gave it to her. I realized that it feels easier to let go of stuff when you know that the person you’re giving it to will use it more. Anyway, I don’t think I’ll be missing it so much because I still have a small unused GWP/sample of this bronzer in Shade 03.

Essence All About Matte Fixing Compact Powder

Essence All About Matt Fixing Compact Powder

I used this around 4x and liked it. I like that it doesn’t look ashy and I think it does delay my oils from breaking to the surface, but when my workmate asked for mattifying powder recommendations, I gave this to her before I could change my mind. I don’t usually set my foundation anyway.

Cargo Los Cabos Too Faced I Will Always Love You

Too Faced Love Flush Long Lasting 16-Hour Blush in I Will Always Love You

After years of evading warmer colors, I finally explored peaches and terracottas this year. I Will Always Love You is accurately described as a gilded peach. I was hoping it will have more brown in it, like how the product shot looked on the website. The color is still beautiful though, but I already have a blush similar to it–Cargo Swimmables Los Cabos. The color and gold sheen of both blushes are the same, only Cargo’s shimmer flecks are slightly bigger and more noticeable in direct light. Both last the whole day. Depending on how deep your pores are, both could accentuate them. I kept Cargo because it was a gift from a dear friend.

Itsjudytime ItsLipTime Palette.png

Pixi x ItsJudyTime – ItsLipTime Palette

I don’t know what I was thinking when I bought this. I should’ve realized that lip palettes are generally not convenient to bring and retouch with.

The first 6 shades on the lighter spectrum are hard to build up and doesn’t work against my light-medium yellow-olive skin tone. The 6 darker shades are beautiful. I was a little disappointed that the formula is far from the Pixi Lustre Mattes that I love. The latter is lightweight and easy to apply.

Fashion 21 2way cake milk moisturizers ever bilena fig blush

Fashion 21 2-Way Cake with Milk Moisturizers and Ever Bilena Blush in Fig

I love both of these.

If you’re having a hard time finding a local powder foundation that’s yellow enough, check out Fashion 21. If you’re a MAC C30,  you probably would fit Shade 02.

Ever Bilena blush in Fig is very close to MAC Mocha Blush. Against my skin tone, it would be hard to tell them apart.

I let them go because my mom asked if she could have them.

In big life decisions, I follow these rules 75% of the time:

Do not make decisions late at night or in the wee hours of the morning.

Do not make decisions while drunk.

Do not make decisions when bored, sad, angry, or extra-happy.

Uhm… So. Why am I not already doing this to control makeup and sunblock shopping? (Yes, I’m having an epiphany.)

For the first time since I last broke the ban (Oct 18), I feel like I can really do this.

Oh, update, I made 2 exceptions:

  1. Grey-black brow powder (currently just sheering out a smudgy eye liner to work as a brow product). Thinking of getting Anastasia Brow Duo in Granite.
  2. 1 purchase a month is ok. Haven’t bought makeup in November. I think I need this because I’m on the verge of a shopping avalanche. If you want to know what that means, read this: Houston, I think we have a problem.

1 month, yo! 2 more to go.

To know why I’m doing this, click here: Stop and Smell The Flowers.

When you’re in a shopping ban, it’s like the universe is doing EVERYTHING in its power to tease and taunt you.

Maybe everything just seems more awesome because I can’t have it.

But my mind is all set. I have a good feeling that I’ll be successful because I was going to get at least 4 of the NARS Audacious lipsticks a day before the ban and I stopped myself because cramming purchases right before the ban is cheating. Ok, I did get one because ~y’know, last hurrah.

I’ll write about this lipstick soon, I promise.

Also, I stumbled upon a new local shopping site — Beauty MNL. I stumbled upon their instagram first, then I clicked the site. I didn’t break, ok? We’re still good with my no-shopping challenge.

I am on a shopping ban — starting today until December 31, 2014.

I had absolutely no plans of doing this because I don’t believe in it. I want to be someone who can avoid buying stuff (in excess of what I can realistically use up) as a default shopping habit — without needing to be on a ban to be able to do it.

Right now, a ban is warranted for a different but somewhat related shopping goal: to take time and appreciate the stuff I already own — a makeup addict lover’s version of stopping and smelling the flowers (was that supposed to be ‘roses’?). The worse case scenario is, I become successful at this ban, then binge shop afterwards. I will still consider that a FAIL.
