Makeup – Lips

The Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink line is a game-changer. They are the most long-lasting AND comfortable matte liquid lipsticks I’ve tried.

A friend sent me two shades as a gift. One of them is Escapist (45), a blackened bluish red. I love the color against my light-medium olive skin with strong yellow undertones. Note: All of the photos shown below were taken at the end of a workday comprising of one meal, 2 coffee drinks, and several trips to the water station.

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink in 45 Escapist

The lipstick feels very tacky upon initial application. It is opaque and there’s no need to apply more than a layer. I scrape off as much as I can from the applicator before I put on the lipstick to make sure it dries down. The tackiness lessens and I don’t notice it throughout the day. That said, I don’t have the habit of smacking my lips.

There’s a learning curve to applying this lipstick but it didn’t take a while before I got the hang of it. The consistency is similar to viscous caramel syrup.

My only gripe is the finish. I don’t know about the other shades, but the two I got (Escapist and Voyager) have considerable shine typical of satin lipsticks. If you’re expecting a flat finish, you might be disappointed.

Putting anything under or over the lipstick significantly affects longevity. I used it as base for a standard wax-based bullet lipstick and it ended up flaking in an unflattering way. I don’t experience the latter when I use the lipstick on its own.

The lipstick is hard to remove if you don’t have a bi-phase makeup remover. You have to bring the latter if you need to reapply. With the shades I own, the lipstick doesn’t look great layered over once it cracks. It needs to be fully removed before you can touch up.

All shades released in the Philippines are cooler-toned. My no-buy is in a lot of danger once the warmer shades are launched. Already I have my eye on Fighter and Amazonian.

Finally, I own something by Fenty Beauty! Fenty Beauty Mattemoiselle in Freckle Fiesta was my last purchase in 2017. I’ve been purchase-free since!

Fenty Beauty Mattemoiselle Lipstick

I love Riri but I didn’t want to buy anything from Fenty Beauty just because Rih has her name on it. I waited for her to come out with a matte lipstick in a relatively wearable shade I like.

Color

Freckle Fiesta is a medium terracotta-toned orange. The color is more vibrant than I thought it would be it’s nowhere near as bright as MAC Lady Danger. It’s still somewhat muted.

Fenty Beauty Freckle Fiesta

Formula

The lipstick is full-coverage, lightweight, and has a thin consistency. It’s not flat matte like matte liquid lipsticks or MAC Retro Matte. It has a little bit of a sheen that’s easy to blot off if you prefer a dry flat finish. It applies evenly and doesn’t tug. It doesn’t have a scent 🙌🏼 hallelujah!!!

MAC Chili, Fenty Freckle Fiesta, Lipz Diva Villain

The bullet is thin, similar to NARS Pure Matte. Think: the diameter of a cigarette. The tube only has 1.7 grams of product (Note: NARS pure matte has 2 grams, MAC’s standard bullets has 3 grams).

Fenty Beauty Freckle Fiesta Lip Swatch

The lipstick doesn’t fade evenly after a meal. You’d most likely get a lip ring, but because of how pigmented it is, you can just smoosh your lips together to get even coverage again albeit sheerer. Don’t expect liquid lipstick level of longevity. With creamy matte formulas, the latter is often sacrificed for comfort.

I’m not the best person to ask if a lipstick is drying. My lips seldom get dry.

Packaging

The packaging is pretty and very photogenic, but it doesn’t have the heftiness of most lipsticks within its price range. The chrome coating is also thin and can get scratched off easily revealing the flesh-toned plastic base which can look cheap and tacky.

This product is so worth it if you find a unique shade that you really like, you’re a big fan of Rihanna, and/or you want to support brands that advocate diversity. Otherwise, you’re not missing much. If you prefer products that offer value for money and are eyeing the dupable colors like MaDamn, Shawty, Spanked, or Griselda, there are a lot of cheaper alternatives with the same/ better quality and pigmentation.

One of my recent most used lipsticks is Lipz Diva Silky Matte Liquid Lipstick in Lucky. I love the formula! It dries down matte and sets completely. This is one of the more comfortable and lightweight matte liquid lipsticks I’ve tried (note, however, that I generally like matte liquid lipsticks). The consistency is thin and it moves with the lips once it dries, if that makes sense.

It doesn’t transfer on mugs / cups unless you’re drinking a fatty coffee or hot chocolate or anything topped with whipped cream. It remains presentable after non-greasy meal and it doesn’t get tacky when wet.

Lipz_Diva_Lucky_2

This shade needs 2 layers to achieve full opacity, but I usually wear only 1 layer. Leaving the middle part sheer-ish makes my lips look fuller.

I love that it smells and feels pepperminty.

A tube has 5ml of product but reasonable for Php 159. I bought mine from my HS classmate Mayen (IG: @wan_stopshop).

The shade seems like MAC Heroine and MAC Flat Out Fabulous combined. I would say it’s a practical buy to get in on 2018 color of the year–Ultra Violet–without having to spend so much.

I let go of a lot of beauty products this year and I should’ve documented them sooner. I believe it’s unrealistic to pan everything so I try to decide right way whether I’d let go of something or try to finish it.

Here’s the first five products I let go of this year:

Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Bronzer 02

Enjoyed using this a lot as a cheek “warmifier” and a blush topper. The finish and texture is very similar to MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural but sheerer. This bronzer gives a subtle glow to the skin. Shade 02 doesn’t look orange and is 1 to 2 shades darker than my skin tone. It doesn’t highlight my pores but it doesn’t diffuse them either.

I let this go not because it’s bad. A friend needed a bronzer so I gave it to her. I realized that it feels easier to let go of stuff when you know that the person you’re giving it to will use it more. Anyway, I don’t think I’ll be missing it so much because I still have a small unused GWP/sample of this bronzer in Shade 03.

Essence All About Matte Fixing Compact Powder

Essence All About Matt Fixing Compact Powder

I used this around 4x and liked it. I like that it doesn’t look ashy and I think it does delay my oils from breaking to the surface, but when my workmate asked for mattifying powder recommendations, I gave this to her before I could change my mind. I don’t usually set my foundation anyway.

Cargo Los Cabos Too Faced I Will Always Love You

Too Faced Love Flush Long Lasting 16-Hour Blush in I Will Always Love You

After years of evading warmer colors, I finally explored peaches and terracottas this year. I Will Always Love You is accurately described as a gilded peach. I was hoping it will have more brown in it, like how the product shot looked on the website. The color is still beautiful though, but I already have a blush similar to it–Cargo Swimmables Los Cabos. The color and gold sheen of both blushes are the same, only Cargo’s shimmer flecks are slightly bigger and more noticeable in direct light. Both last the whole day. Depending on how deep your pores are, both could accentuate them. I kept Cargo because it was a gift from a dear friend.

Pixi x ItsJudyTime – ItsLipTime Palette

I don’t know what I was thinking when I bought this. I should’ve realized that lip palettes are generally not convenient to bring and retouch with.

The first 6 shades on the lighter spectrum are hard to build up and doesn’t work against my light-medium yellow-olive skin tone. The 6 darker shades are beautiful. I was a little disappointed that the formula is far from the Pixi Lustre Mattes that I love. The latter is lightweight and easy to apply.

Fashion 21 2way cake milk moisturizers ever bilena fig blush

Fashion 21 2-Way Cake with Milk Moisturizers and Ever Bilena Blush in Fig

I love both of these.

If you’re having a hard time finding a local powder foundation that’s yellow enough, check out Fashion 21. If you’re a MAC C30,  you probably would fit Shade 02.

Ever Bilena blush in Fig is very close to MAC Mocha Blush. Against my skin tone, it would be hard to tell them apart.

I let them go because my mom asked if she could have them.

Quick post–

I noticed that my peach-toned lipstick collection is growing. I used to avoid all warm-toned lipsticks because most of them don’t look good on my light/medium (closer to medium), greenish-yellow skin tone.

I realized that same as red lipstick, there could be a peach, coral, or orange for me. There aren’t a lot of them. I decided to swatch all of them and I found two that are very VERY similar–NARS Audacious in Brigitte and Happy Skin Lip and Cheek Mousse in Swept off My Feet*.

NARS Audacious Brigitte Happy Skin Swept Off My Feet
Swatches | Top – Happy Skin Swept Off My Feet; Bottom – NARS Audacious Brigitte

I’m not good at describing warmer lip shades. But on my skin tone, they’re a mish mash of pink, peach, and coral. If you have these, how would you describe the color?

Anyway, Swept Off My Feet is just a tad pinker, hence the “-ish” after “Dupe”, but if you have the same skin tone as me, these two will look the same. They kind of remind me of L’Oreal Fairy Touch, but I bet the latter is peachier.

I hope I could do a proper review soon. No promises.
