Colourpop Lippie Stix Swatches: Frida, Brink, and Blood

I wanted to try out ColourPop Lippie Stix for the longest time, but I guess the want wasn’t strong enough, or maybe, my gut was hinting on something.

I’m not a fan of beating around the bush, so let me tell it to you straight — these are not my favorite lip products. I don’t hate them. They’re actually really good but sometimes I have this tendency to nitpick on makeup products.

There are little things that make me not inclined to pick up something and most of the time it is not deliberate. I just notice it. That is the case with these lipsticks. When I first tried them on, I did like the formula which I had high expectations of because these lipsticks aren’t cheap (by the gram, they cost as much as MAC lipsticks). They apply evenly and are opaque.

Anyway, I’ve been tallying up how many times I use each of my makeup products and I noticed that these don’t usually make it to the list. I’ve pinpointed two problems: scent and girth (?!?! – are we still talking about lipsticks?).

The lipsticks smell like powdered milk candy and something else I can’t describe. Scent is a personal thing and most people do love how these smell. I’m thinking that maybe my super human smelling ability from (ex)pregnancy still hasn’t worn off.

The other thing — it’s too thin! I prefer the girth of standard-sized lipstick bullets. I’ve mastered the art of swiping lipsticks just once and applying it almost perfectly, without a lip pencil. For some reason, when I apply Colourpop, the lip perimeter line turn out wobbly and I hate needing to correct it.

Anyway, here are the shades I have/had:

ColourPop Blood (Matte)

This is one of the recently released shades. I don’t know if it’s limited edition. It’s the classic wine red shade that is the same color as the two other reds I own, so I let it go.

The finish of ColourPop’s mattes is similar to MAC’s matte lipstick line (not the retro mattes). It has a liitle shine and tugs just a tiny bit but still relatively easy to apply.

ColourPop Frida (Satin)

Frida is described as a warm mid tone nude pink. When I first wore this, I thought “This is the color most brides seem to want to wear on their wedding day” (if they were my skin tone). It leans peachy coral on me and it reminds me of MAC Please Me.

ColourPop Brink (Matte)

ColourPop said this was inspired by the “Kylie Jenner lip”. To be honest, I still don’t know what Kylie Jenner’s signature lip color is because she doesn’t seem to stick to just one color.

ColourPop describes Brink as a warm dusty taupe. What that color is that supposed to look like?

I would describe this as a light/medium muted pink brown. I prefer my MLBB lipsticks to have a mauve tone in them so I let this go, too.

For a time, I wanted to get Grind (dupe for MAC Heroine), but unless ColourPop decides to change or remove the scent, I probably won’t try any more colors. If you’re not usually bothered by strong lipstick scents, these are good lipsticks. They’re perfect for experimenting with colors you haven’t tried before. The size is only a third of a standard lipstick which is fine by me. Who finishes lipsticks these days anyway?

  1. Thanks a lot for the awesome swatches! We have similar skin tone, I was thinking of buying Brink online, but decided not too since it might look pale. It’s really difficult to find a good lipstick in terracotta shade, so many brands are after the Kylie Jenner look ;(.

  2. im glad more girls are pointing out that these arent really cheap cause of the amount of product in it. i really really wanted to try these (and their eyeshadows) but now hindi na masyado cause of lot of reviews are complaining din about the scent. im really sensitive to lipsticks scents so ill prolly skip this for good kahit na sobrang ganda nila on your swatches :} i still wanna try the metallic eyeshadows tho :)

  3. I’ve been dying to make a Colorpop order but I WOULDN’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START in terms of choosing what to buy. TBH, haven’t heard that much about their lipsticks (in relation to the eyeshadows) but HOLY SMOKES BLOOD AND MAC’S DIVA. SO UP MY ALLEY. (And why have I never heard of them before?? So out of the loop in the ‘reds’ world)

Totall bummer about the scent though, and I totally understand. I have a Bourjois blush that’s quite pretty shade wise, but holy shats it smells of old lady roses and I can’t bear to have it on my face because it LINGERS ALL DAY LONG. But anyways, right, matte lipsticks. Have you tried Wet n Wild’s lipsticks? They have all sorts of crazy colours, have the usual ‘girth’ (well I feel dirty already), and are matte and opaque.

    1. I have tried them. I let go of most of them. I still have one left, Raivin’ Raisin. They’re not as matte as I would like but I think it’s because of the temperature here.

  4. I read a lot of reviews before I asked some to purchase my lippiestix for me. I was a HUGE fan at first(I even encouraged my officemates to buy). I ordered four colors on my first purchase. I really love the Lumiere and Brink. However, as times goes by I realized why the price is cheap in the first place. It did kinda smell weird in the long run. Plus the white packaging of the product – especially the silver logo is nowhere to be found by the way. Felt bad for it because I really had high hopes for it.

  5. The girth is fine with me but the smell gah! I ordered some of their ultra matte liquid lipstick which I heard doesn’t have any scent. I’m a matte lipstick fan too <3

    1. Hello fellow matte lipstick fan! The scent, di ko talaga kaya. I dipped what’s left of mine in alcohol to somehow tone down the scent and it worked naman.

  6. I don’t mind lip balms with scents but for some reason, not lipsticks. It’s disturbing especially if they smell like candies -_- But they do have really nice colors. Even the dark one seems easy to wear.

    1. True. I love that ColourPop came out with a lot of colors and that they’re inexpensive. So if there’s a color you’d want to try, it won’t be too much of an investment.

  7. I’ve always been curious about Frida but I haven’t decided yet if I should give in or not because of the hype around these lippies. I usually let the hype die down before I do. Pero milky scent? I want! I love the smell of milk. :)

  8. I think I like Blink because it is very wearable but Blood is absolutely gorgeous! Haven’t tried Colour Pop yet and I also would like to but yeah, I don’t like how thin it is. :/

  9. Scent and girth! :)) You do have a point. It took me some time to adjust to crayon lipsticks, so I imagine this brand new presentation will also take time to warm up to. I also still prefer the traditional bullet type.

I like the variety of unusual colors they have, and that’s what made me so interested to check them out. However, the one color I was fascinated with turned out to have a glossy finish. Guh. Tsaka na lang nga.

  10. I’m so amazed how easy it is for you to let go of lip products. Lipsticks kasi are my favorite makeup items and I always have a hard time letting them go. Waaaaa….

Colourpop now has matte liquid lipsticks ah. Maybe you wanna try? :D

  11. I’ve been meaning to get one of these, especially when I see swatches on my Instagram, but Tellie perfectly said how I feel about them. I didn’t feel the massive urge to get them and I almost always forget about getting them instantly, lol. Parang takaw tingin lang!

  12. I’ve been meaning to give these a try due to the rave reviews but I think I’ll hold off on the lips and try the eyeshadows instead xD

  13. I got worked up about these lippies but I keep holding back because I’m not dying to try them. I don’t doubt that they’re reliable (smooth, even formula with true colors) but IDK… blah. NARS Audacious was a game-changer and I didn’t even get any.

  14. Tagal ko na rin gusto i-try to, I actually posted it quite a few times on my blog. But I only actually ordered last week! I’m excited to get my hands on them na nga, hopefully they don’t disappoint! I ordered Cookie, Cake, and Julep :-)

  15. I actually never tried anything from colorpop, mostly because they don’t ship to Europe yet.
In the US people are going crazy with them…but as someone who likes things to be fuctional, their products don’t really catch my attention. Exception to the blushes. I really do like the shades you picked and I believe they look really nice on you :3 but I totally understand if the scent bothers you that much :c Some scents are just unbearable.
    Take care*

  16. di ko din trip masyado ung colourpop. prang gimik ung price, oo mura xa pero madaling maubos. saka i do’t like the scent too.. ala sustagen hehehe

  17. I’m with you! I loved these at first (including the scent) but over wearing it started to bother me (cloying). At least you don’t have to reapply these often. Also, I prefer full-girth lipstick bullets, too. These go all wobbly on the lipline for me as well! I’m glad I’m not the only one.

    1. Glad to know I’m not alone this. Sometimes I feel sad when I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t like a much raved about product.

What do you think?
