I wanted to try out ColourPop Lippie Stix for the longest time, but I guess the want wasn’t strong enough, or maybe, my gut was hinting on something.
I’m not a fan of beating around the bush, so let me tell it to you straight — these are not my favorite lip products. I don’t hate them. They’re actually really good but sometimes I have this tendency to nitpick on makeup products.
There are little things that make me not inclined to pick up something and most of the time it is not deliberate. I just notice it. That is the case with these lipsticks. When I first tried them on, I did like the formula which I had high expectations of because these lipsticks aren’t cheap (by the gram, they cost as much as MAC lipsticks). They apply evenly and are opaque.
Anyway, I’ve been tallying up how many times I use each of my makeup products and I noticed that these don’t usually make it to the list. I’ve pinpointed two problems: scent and girth (?!?! – are we still talking about lipsticks?).
The lipsticks smell like powdered milk candy and something else I can’t describe. Scent is a personal thing and most people do love how these smell. I’m thinking that maybe my super human smelling ability from (ex)pregnancy still hasn’t worn off.
The other thing — it’s too thin! I prefer the girth of standard-sized lipstick bullets. I’ve mastered the art of swiping lipsticks just once and applying it almost perfectly, without a lip pencil. For some reason, when I apply Colourpop, the lip perimeter line turn out wobbly and I hate needing to correct it.
Anyway, here are the shades I have/had:
ColourPop Blood (Matte)
This is one of the recently released shades. I don’t know if it’s limited edition. It’s the classic wine red shade that is the same color as the two other reds I own, so I let it go.
The finish of ColourPop’s mattes is similar to MAC’s matte lipstick line (not the retro mattes). It has a liitle shine and tugs just a tiny bit but still relatively easy to apply.
ColourPop Frida (Satin)
Frida is described as a warm mid tone nude pink. When I first wore this, I thought “This is the color most brides seem to want to wear on their wedding day” (if they were my skin tone). It leans peachy coral on me and it reminds me of MAC Please Me.
ColourPop Brink (Matte)
ColourPop said this was inspired by the “Kylie Jenner lip”. To be honest, I still don’t know what Kylie Jenner’s signature lip color is because she doesn’t seem to stick to just one color.
ColourPop describes Brink as a warm dusty taupe. What that color is that supposed to look like?
I would describe this as a light/medium muted pink brown. I prefer my MLBB lipsticks to have a mauve tone in them so I let this go, too.
* * *
For a time, I wanted to get Grind (dupe for MAC Heroine), but unless ColourPop decides to change or remove the scent, I probably won’t try any more colors. If you’re not usually bothered by strong lipstick scents, these are good lipsticks. They’re perfect for experimenting with colors you haven’t tried before. The size is only a third of a standard lipstick which is fine by me. Who finishes lipsticks these days anyway?
