Toss or Keep: L’Oreal True Match Super-Blendable Foundation Review + Comparison Swatches

Project Toss or Keep — where I would use one foundation for most of the month and decide if I would toss or keep it.

I was looking to replace my L’Oreal Lucent Magique when I first saw the True Match Super-Blendable line. Unfortunately, I didn’t match with any of their “W” colors. The sales assistant (SA) almost forced me to settle with W4 instead. To be fair, it was a good recommendation since W4 was indeed the closest match out of all available shades. However, I’m really particular about getting the right undertone when it comes to foundations.

Color

A few weeks after that, I read Hazel’s (Dress Me Up Buttercup) post on Super-Blendable and saw that L’Oreal came out with a new shade: W4.5 Fresh Beige. It seems a lot yellower than W4 so I went back to Watsons and bought it (there you go, folks, that is my foundation shopping thought process).

Foundations Swatches: Koh Gen Do Aqua, NARS Sheer Glow, L'Oreal Super-Blendable
L’Oreal True Match Super-Blendable [Fresh Beige 4.5] along with 2 foundations that are closest to my skin tone: Koh Gen Do Aqua OC-2 and NARS Sheer Glow Stromboli
It has the same undertone as my previous Lucent Magique G4 (Gold Shell) only half a shade darker. Most of the time, even when I buy a foundation that’s a shade too light or dark for me, as long as the base tone is correct, I can get away with it.

Coverage and Finish

The foundation has medium coverage. You still need to use concealer to cover up redness if you have any.

The foundation yields a more satin finish when applied with fingers. By the way, this foundation is super-blendable. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to work it in.

I usually apply it with a dense short-bristled brush like Shiseido Perfect Foundation Brush or Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. Using the latter results in a semi-matte skin-like finish. There’s dew without the shimmer.

Semi-matte skin-like finish sounds like a good thing. Unfortunately, the finish is so “skin like” that it doesn’t blur out fine lines and pores (sans primer and setting powder). It doesn’t make them look worse than they actually are, but it doesn’t do anything. This is a deal breaker for me because I only bother with foundation for overall skin texture enhancement.

Over silicone-based primers and sunscreens, pore appearance becomes a non-issue except for the extra-deep pores on my nostril area. I noticed that the foundation tends to create tiny pools of pigment inside those pores making me look like I have polka-dotted nose. It doesn’t go away even when I really work the foundation in with a makeup brush. This doesn’t happen when I use a plain moisturizer underneath.

Wear and Longevity

Without setting with powder, my t-zone and the sides of my nose gets extremely shiny within the next hour or 2 from application. If you built it up to full coverage, it can look mucky. I use the foundation sheer and I usually just use oil-blotting sheets when I notice that I’m starting to become shiny.

This foundation needs to be set with powder. I use Ben Nye Banana Luxury powder most of the time. When I don’t set it with powder, there will be a LOT of transfer, like the foundation doesn’t fully set.

When you use blotting sheets a lot (like I do), you’ll end up with barely any foundation by the end of the day. I have relatively even-toned skin so this doesn’t bother me. As long as I don’t look “dirty” I’m ok. To be honest, for extremely oily skinned people who need the coverage, I don’t think this would work. I’m almost sure it will slide off.

I didn’t notice this before but since it came under close scrutiny for the toss or keep series, I found out that this doesn’t wear off nicely :(

Anyway, as I said, the foundation doesn’t do much to blur out pores but it doesn’t make them look worse either. Left – With Foundation; Right – No Foundation

On most days, it comes off in patches. I guess this is mostly because of the transfer issue and partly because I unconsciously touch my face a lot.

Other Notes

The foundation comes in a glass bottle with a screw cap top (no pump). It costs Php 899 which is almost twice as expensive as US price.

Toss or Keep?

This is a toss. I’m not sure what changed. I remember liking this the first few times I used it. Maybe I was still blinded by the high back then.

I checked Makeup Alley and the reviews are split. I am theorizing that each shade might perform differently.

  1. Thanks for the review. I was thinking of buying it.

By the way, your blog gives the most practical product reviews. Keep it up.

P.S. I hoarded tretinoin cream the last time I went to the Philippines, thanks to you. :)

  2. thinking of buying this (but still waiting for a sale) and your review makes me think twice and will probably stick with the iope bb cream that I have…or maybe wait for my sister to give me her’s since she have oily skin and will probably have the same issues you mentioned ;)

  3. I have the L’Oreal Super Blendable Foundation and haven’t noticed a transfer issue. That being said, I do make sure to use a US dime sized (small) amount and blend well. I’m also not oily-skinned or living in a humid environment. Sad that it didn’t work for you though–just goes to show how the same product can be so different on people O_o

Can’t wait to see your verdict on the MUFE HD. First foundation that I’ve found that matched my skin tone and base tone perfectly :)

    1. …On people and in places. We usually have a variant of whatever was released in the US e.g. L’Oreal Lumi Magique is “Lucent Magique” here. I remember checking and comparing the ingredients for these two and there are slight differences.

For the True Match Super-Blendable line, though, it seems to be the same release — product name, packaging, and ingredients.

  4. Good call on this one, I’d toss it too! I think you initially loved it for the shade matching, but as for the rest of the stuff that makes foundation good (wear, comfort, longevity) it’s a bomb.

  5. This was literally the first foundation I ever bought and it transferred onto a male friend’s white shirt. I was MORTIFIED, but back then, I didn’t know what setting powder was (makeup n00b), so there’s that. But I definitely agree with most of the points here–since I was a makeup n00b and didn’t know how to apply foundation properly to conceal my blemishes, I had a pretty hard time managing this foundation.

  6. I definitely agree on the transfer.. Even if I set it with powder there is just a lot of transfer from this foundation, and I hate it! :( I still use it though because.. sayang..

  7. I actually never tried this one, mostly because it’s not even available here.
But I can totally understand you! there are products that push me into the “love and hate ” situation, until I finally get it. (i’m having something like that with my current eye primer for example..)

but if you aren’t happy with it, there’s no motive to keep it.
Take care, have a nice day!*

  8. I’ve always found the L’Oreal foundations to be a miss – mainly due to poor skin tone match and the pool of oiliness I turn into after a few hours of wearing their foundations.
Curious to see how you go with MUFE HD. I’m testing the same at the moment in 123 :)

    1. We use the same shade. I was confused between 123 and 127 and settled with the former. Let me know what you think? Right now, I’m not crazy about it but it’s good.

  9. Rae, you are so thorough with your reviews! Thanks for keeping the bar raised so high. Also, I like this Toss or Keep Series! It’s like a game, “is she gonna toss or keep” and the reader makes a guess at the verdict and stays in suspense until the end! :D

What do you think?
