Toss or Keep: BECCA Luminous Skin Colour Review + Other Foundations I’m Keeping

Project Toss or Keep — where I would use one foundation for most of the month and decide if I would toss or keep it.

I kind of cheated when I chose BECCA to kick off this series. I started with something easy for motivation. I already tried letting go of this foundation last year just because of the scent. It smells like old school makeup. I decided to hold on to it again and found a way to make it work by setting it with a heavily scented finishing powder. Based on reviews, most people don’t seem to be bothered by the smell, so I guess it’s just me.

This should be my kind of foundation — low coverage, dewy finish. But I was let down by the overall experience. The product didn’t live up to the price tag (PhP 2,900 at Adora). It is good, but when I think of how much it cost, it wasn’t good enough.

Becca Luminous Ultra Sheer 2014-08-02 01.46.00
BECCA Luminous Skin Colour | Shade: Camel

When they labeled this ultra-sheer, they meant it. Because it really is sheerer than sheer. I can somehow “build it up” to sheer (whut?!) but what’s the point? This foundation is more for people with relatively even-toned skin who only needs an anti-dullifier.

When the sales person applied this on me at the store, I thought the coverage was the same as Koh Gen Doh Aqua. The lighting at Adora, guys — make sure you check the makeup applied to you in different lighting before buying makeup there or anywhere else.

While I do love sheer skin enhancing foundations, this is just too sheer, sheerer than all tinted moisturizers and bb creams I’ve tried.

What I did like is that it’s moisturizing. I skip moisturizer altogether when I use this. However, it only has SPF 25+. I want more plus-ses with my SPF (+ = UVA protection) so I usually put on sunblock first when using this.

I honestly think I can finish this if I use it with Chanel Les Beiges powder or any other powder that has equally strong but tolerable scent. If I didn’t have 12 other face bases, this is a keep since I don’t need much coverage for everyday. But relative to all other low coverage foundations I have, my final verdict is: TOSS.

Other Foundations I’m Keeping (For Now)

I did a quick run-through of all other foundations I will defer testing and prioritize the ones I’m 50-50 about. For now, I decided to keep these four:

  • NARS Sheer Glow – Stromboli
  • Ellana Minerals Pressed Foundation – Macchiato
  • MAC Face and Body – C4
  • Koh Gen Doh Aqua  – OC2

  1. I seriously need to do a foundation purge. I have so many that are either too dark or too light, the wrong undertone, etc but I hold onto them thinking that I’ll be able to color correct them. So far, I’ve been mixing them and having a good result :D Still want to try Bourjois, Marc Jacobs, and Laura Mercier but not going to until I finish up at least 3 more…finished up my Covergirl finally!

  2. The lighting test! Gets me every time. Just when I think a foundation is perfect, all I have to do is go home and see how unnatural it looks like under fluorescent light. sigh Part of the reason why it’s taking me an eternity to choose.

    1. I take it you’re particular about shade and undertone. Me too.

Anyway, if you haven’t yet, check out Koh Gen Do Aqua. It doesn’t change color and the colors are ‘far east asia’ skintone-friendly.

    1. Also, my throat becomes dry and sometimes I become stuffy. I haven’t figured out what ingredient causes this reaction. But so far I’m ok with citrus and vanilla scents. I mostly react to floral and musky scents.

    1. Parang tinted moisturizer. :(

Anyway, I’ve been checking your twitter feed every few times for the links you share re: NARS All-Day Luminous :P

  3. I feel for you doing this – but I love it at the same time, so good job!

I’m pretty content when it comes to bases – I have three atm (2 foundations and one BB cream, but the new NARS foundation is calling me ever so slightly…) but eyeshadows seem to be what I ‘collect’ sigh.

Will be looking forward to the next instalment! :D

    1. Me too! I’ve been deliberately looking for, reading, and re-reading negative reviews (however few they are) to keep me from buying. Although, it is one of my 4 allowable purchases for the year. I can only buy 4 items so I have to make it count.

What do you think?
