I am on a shopping ban — starting today until December 31, 2014.

I had absolutely no plans of doing this because I don’t believe in it. I want to be someone who can avoid buying stuff (in excess of what I can realistically use up) as a default shopping habit — without needing to be on a ban to be able to do it.

Right now, a ban is warranted for a different but somewhat related shopping goal: to take time and appreciate the stuff I already own — a makeup addict lover’s version of stopping and smelling the flowers (was that supposed to be ‘roses’?). The worse case scenario is, I become successful at this ban, then binge shop afterwards. I will still consider that a FAIL.

My buying habits have gone crazy in the 3rd quarter of this year. I seem to be instantly distracted by stuff that are new to me. Good thing I’m not usually attracted to literally “new products” just because they’re new (i.e., new releases and limited edition items).

I need to be on a ban to break the cycle I’m currently in. I need to find a new source of high (I’ll try to exercise) and find a more permanent solution to this problem. For a time, I even considered quitting Scatterbraintures.

I have a lot of new-ish stuff — their new-ness haven’t even been fully savored because my mind is already on all the other things I (might) want.

In case you’re wondering, there will be exceptions:

  1. 2 pairs of false lashes (one pair to practice with, and another to use for a wedding)
  2. Bobbi Brown Black Gel Liner (because I don’t have a black gel liner, for real, but I’m holding off ’til I’m used to putting on liner everyday)
  3. Stuff to merely replace used up products that I only have one item of (example: if I run out of the only mascara I currently own)
  4. Sample Room stuff (so I can at least break even with the VIP fee)
  5. Supplies (cotton pads, brow razors, etc.)

I wasn’t going to write about this because I’m afraid I won’t be able to follow through, but I want to be in on the challenge with Romzs (read her post here: Makeup No-Buy 2014) and so that you can call me out on it. :D [EDIT: Shev is doing a ban as well, read: October Beauty Ban and The Hit Pan Project]

Stalk me on twitter and instagram.

Hi, I’m Rae and I am a scatterbrain. I am in my 30s and I write in this blog from the Philippines. I spend a tiny portion of my time de-stressing with makeup and skin care. Email: scatterbraintures@gmail.com | Instagram: @scatterbraintures

  1. I’ve tried doing the shopping ban as well but I am just successful during the first phase but whenever I see cute stuff, I give in huhu plus with my work now, I am always attracted to nice makeup products that I can use for my clients. It’s funny that whenever I shop, I think of my clients first more than myself and I don’t know if it’s bad or what hahaha. I also wanted to try the B.Brown liner, I’m currently using LA girl Gel liners in very black and dark brown, and I am really satisfied with it that made me skip buying the B.Brown for the mean time.

    • I have LA Girl in dark brown! Hmmm… Maybe yung black na lang nun ang bilhin ko instead of bobbi brown’s liner. Thanks Gen-zel!

  2. Alam mo sis, when I was single and I didn’t have a baby yet, kahit anong sabihin ko sa sarili ko na shopping ban ako hindi ko talaga makaya. Pero nung nagkaron na ako ng baby, talagang nagiba na ang priorities ko bigla.

My makeup lemmings had to be set aside for his milk, schooling, clothes, etc.

Teka am I trying to influence you to get a baby na? Wag! Mas magastos! Mag shopping ka na lang! (bi-polar mode)

    • Hahaha. We’ll see. So screw with the ban and enjoy having no child yet? :P

  3. Good luck Rae! I can only go on a ban for a short time pero I’m on a MAC limited edition ban now. I’m hoping I can do it forever (kamusta naman yon di ba?) but my exceptions are some lipstick shades I’m in love with like Heaux, Pleasurebomb and Ronnie Red if they get repromoted.

The upcoming Nars blush palette doesn’t have Orgasm, it’s Final Cut, Miss Liberty, Sexy Fantasy and Deep Throat that’s included. I’m assuming we’re talking about the same palette. Hihi

    • Yeah, had my facts wrong. But I think I’m ok not getting that palette since they’re all permanent.

  4. Hi!!! This is so not related to the blogpost but can you please suggest sunblock suited for my oily skin? I’m currently using the Neutrogena one and I think it’s causing me to breakout since it’s too oily. Ive tried the Armada (spf 45) but too expensive to buy again. Thank you!

    • How much is Armada 45 now. Grabe magtaas ng price ang vmv. Anyway, are you ok with alcohol in sunscreen? All of the ones I use now has alcohol in them but they’re super ok for my oily skin.

I use Kanebo Allie Long Keep UV gel (pink label), it’s priced at 1,500 pero parang sulit na din for spf50++++ that doesn’t feel heavy. It dries to a semi-matte finish and works well under makeup.

The other ones naman are those watery japenese ones that are silicone and alcohol based. Biore UV perfect face milk and Sunplay Clear Water. I prefer Biore because it’s really thin and matte. It’s 450 at TPE marketplace. Sunplay is 300+ lang ata at SM Store/Watsons.

      • thank you! I’ll check those out! :) bought the armada sunblock when it was on sale in taste central before so i forgot already hehe

        • Forgot to mention, Sunplay has the most shine of all three, try that out last. :)

    • Sisingit ako. Natry nyo na mentholatum sunblocks? Okay sya for me, not oily and very affordable at 349 per bottle.

      • Yup, yung Sunplay. Pero clear water pa lang na-try ko. Hindi pa yung ibang variants.

  5. Ok I fully support this. I hate the Christmas timing but like you, I don’t care about LEs. It’s the sales I’m more worried about.

Aaaand now I’m talking like I’m the one going through the ban, hahaha!

    • I’ve given that a lot of thought. I tried to remember all of the shopping I did in recent months and realized that only one particular purchase was motivated by a sale. And it was very recent — Luxola’s 33% off sale.

I usually ‘want’ an idea of a product, not a specific item/brand, e.g. an oxblood red matte lipstick. I go out of my way to find one and have it. And I don’t wait. That’s what gets me to shop.

  6. I know you can do it and I know it’s very difficult. I tried to ban myself from buying more books than I can read but sometimes, I really can’t help it. I avoid going to the mall or checking online bookstore so I won’t be tempted of buying anything new.

Until Dec 31? But it’s almost Christmas and there will be Christmas bonus and sales.

    • Hahaha, yes! Well, I can only buy for other people. Just not for me. Books! That’s a whole ‘nother animal. Esp after I bought an ereader, I can’t physically see how many unread books I have unless I check the virtual library.

    • Thanks Olga. I think you’re one of the people who inspired me to do this. I backread some of your posts.

      • Oh, that’s a surprise!! :) I happened to have purchased quite a few new makeup items lately myself (although the crickets in my blog wouldn’t make you think so LOL) and I’m taking a step back at the moment as well!

    • Naku, same with Katsy! Daming Holiday collection! Huhu. But I support you, Rae, all the way! Hope I can impose and be disciplined enough to do this too. Maybe if I focus on watercolor more. Hehe. :-)

      • Will try to distract myself with books and attempting at getting healthier. Really really hope this pushes through.

    • Thanks!!!! Holiday palettes could be really difficult to ignore because a lot of them are ‘permanent’ stuff in a palette. Just like the NARS palette that’s coming out with all the best selling blushes. I know it has laguna and orgasm again. But aside from laguna, I haven’t tried any of the other stuff in that palette: orgasm, desire, oasis, and deep throat. It would be a good intro to the product line that NARS is most famous for.

I just take comfort in the fact that those products aren’t limited edition and I don’t need all of them…

  7. Wow I didn’t know you subscribed to the VIP. Is it worth it ba? I haven’t really tried it.

I admire you for going on a shopping ban, although realistically I am on a similar thing. I think this is why I tend to gravitate towards the cheap stuff, because that’s all I can afford by saving lunch money (yes I happen to be in Grade 5! haha). I should really do a better planning for bigger purchases so I won’t get swamped with things I don’t really want in the long run. /nobela

    • I think it will depend on the stuff they come out with. VIP is P699. I already “bought” P1,033 worth of stuff, but with Php100 shipping. Right now, I’m technically at a gain, having paid Php799 for Php 1,033 worth of products. But Php799 is still money out. I don’t count the Php200+ as savings.

That said, it was worth it for me, because I’ve been looking EVERYWHERE for the Daylong Cetaphil sunblock and I couldn’t find it in all Watsons stores I went to. I’m running out of my fave sunblock so I’m technically going to buy sunblock anyway.

I just hope they come out with lots of good utilitarian items so I can get the most out of the shipping fee and the PHp 699.

  8. Are you actually going on a hiatus?? Huhuhu nooooo :((( Anyway. Goodluck sa ban. Push mo yan te hehe

What do you think?
