The I Love Drugstore Makeup Tag

Let’s end the week with a tag!

1. What is your favorite drugstore makeup brand overall?

Shocks. Unang tanong pa lang ang hirap na.

I think I don’t have a favorite overall.  I haven’t exhaustively explored the whole makeup line of any brand, regardless of price-point.  But if there are two brands that have the potential to be my favorite — they are L’Oreal (they have matte lipsticks now!) and Fashion 21/Fanny Serrano.  I can see myself being able to complete a whole look with using either of those two.

I want to explore Korean drugstore makeup but the first stuff I look for are lipsticks and face bases — and they usually don’t have the colors and textures I prefer. If a brand doesn’t have a face base that will fit me, I’m not likely to say it’s favorite-able.

2. What are your favorite face, cheek and lip products?

FACE – It used to be L’Oreal Lucent Magique in G4, but I broke it.  So right now, it’s Fashion 21 Two-way Cake Foundation with Milk Moisturizers. My shade is #3, and it’s like a powder version of Lucent Magique G4. (Left: MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus in C40 | Right: Fashion 21 Two-Way Cake Foundation in #3)

CHEEK – Most of the time I use my lipsticks as cream blushes and I usually stick to what already works.

My favorite is Avon Simply Pretty Lip and Cheek Tint but mine is used up. With the stuff I currently have, a recent favorite is Sonia Kashuk’s Creme Blush in Petal. It’s a cream to powder formula and it meshes really well with my skin.

LIP PRODUCTS – Sophie Paris Koshize Satinlips! They’re not satin, they’re matte. Their bold colors are the best drugstore matte lipsticks I have come across, shoving Wet ‘N Wild Megalast off the top of my favorite matte lipsticks. We’ll see once I try any of the Rimmel matte lipsticks.

3. Least favorite product?

I think “least favorite” is a nice way of saying “products you hate”. So, I’ll tell you about the products that got me really disappointed these past releases — they’re Revlon lip products.  I know: unpopular opinion.

It all started with the Revlon Balm Stains. I thought I liked them, but color is a huge deal for me, and all of them changes color as the day goes on.

Next, the Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipsticks. They just didn’t have the opacity and staying power that I usually look for in matte lipsticks. They were replaced by the Matte Balms but they still were not as long-lasting as the other mattes I have.

4. What is the best makeup bargain?

Are makeup brushes counted? If yes – this big and fluffy generic kabuki brush from The Landmark.  I don’t feel the need to buy Real Techniques powder brush anymore.

If brushes aren’t counted – the powder foundation by Fashion 21. You have no idea how difficult it is to find a true yellow powder foundation in the drugstore.

5. What is your favorite underdog product? (Something you love that often gets overlooked?)

Etude House Face Corset in #5 (Tight Shading Corset). Matte shaders are not easy to find in the drugstore and I don’t hear a lot about this, including the Face Corset blushes. But I live under a rock so… who knows what people are talking about these days.

6. A drugstore product that is overpriced?

I wish I could tell you which product is overpriced relative to quality.  But in general, makeup from abroad is overpriced in the Philippines. I don’t know why. Is it because of tax? Customs duties? It’s like makeup is getting taxed the same as alcohol and cigarettes. Sure, maybe makeup is a vice, but…

Dear someone up there in the government,

If you think you can do something about makeup-pricing here in the Philippines, please do it now.

Love,
Rae

7. Show your best drugstore dupe(s)!!!

Oh, sorry I can’t. If I have something the same as what I already have. I dispose one of them. BUT. I have two highlighters that are technically not dupes but their finish is almost the same: Kevyn Aucoin Celestial Powder and ZA Cheeks Groovy in June Bride.

It’s difficult to find a powder highlighter (even with high-end products) that will give skin-like sheen. I bet, if ZA comes out with a champagne version of this highlighter, I won’t purchase KA Celestial Powder anymore. (Top: KA, Bottom: ZA)

8. Drugstore product that isn’t worth the hype?

I don’t like this question. I don’t think something’s not worth the hype just because I don’t like it. I have very specific preferences. So, I thought I’d just mention the hyped products I didn’t like: Revlon Balm Stains and Matte Balms

Bonus: Favorite Drugstore Makeup Vlogger

Anne Clutz. Seriously, this woman is the awesomest. I like how candid her videos are. I was subscribed to her before she reached her first 1,000 followers and now she’s at 10,000!!! I’m so happy… and ang ganda lang nya. When you check out her channel, please tell her I sent you :D

Sayang lang, we don’t have the same coloring. But I think her foundation reviews are the best. It’s really helpful when the v/blogger is based in the Philippines considering the weather and humidity here.

Anyway, in past years (yes, years), I’ve received a gazillion tags (e.g., Liebster, Sunshine, etc.) from different blogger friends and I never got around to answering them. Here’s a shout out to all of you guys and I tag you back with the I Love Drugstore Makeup tag. :)

I hope I found everyone. If I missed one, tweet me or something. Sorry girls, I can’t answer all of your tag questions. But if you have that one question you want me to answer, type them in HERE.

I also tag Elaine, Carina, and these lovely girls (including the gentleman at the back, hehehe!):

EDIT: Anne now has a blog! Visit her website here: Anne Clutz

  1. I follow Ms. Anne sa Youtube. I like how she reviews makeup. She really emphasize dun sa skin imperfections nya before applying the makeup. For me kasi mas mkkita dun kung okay or maganda yung product esp. the foundation or BB cream…

  2. You’ll be surprised with Darling. It may look lavender upon application, but you end up with an almost hot pink stain when it wears off.

Honey, which is supposed to be a mauvey pink, turns into a coral stain on my lips.

    Oh well.

  3. I’m sorry I saw this now lang! :) Will carry on with the tag when I haz the time na! Thanks for tagging me, babe.

  4. I didn’t get Darling as I wasn’t into lavender lips (highly regret now that I can’t find it anywhere) but Honey and Cherish, which are light pinks, became a bright magenta and fuchsia stain–quite annoying. I agree that if the color is brighter, the stain matched better but those two really shocked me.

I had a pale, lavender pink one in 901b, Think Pink. It was dry and chalky (if that makes sense), settled in the lines of my lips (and I am quite young so that was surprising), and the color was off (but that’s my fault). There were also these weird balls of pigment in it so when I tried to wear it, I got a bunch of tiny balls on my lips and the color skipped. I didn’t want to throw it away so I use it as a cream blush now. Still not a fan of lavender pinks but at least my cheeks pull it off better than my lips xD

  5. Is the shade from Revlon Balm Stains ‘Darling’? I had the same experience. It’s ok if the shade that you end up with is the same as the balm itself or another color you really like. Unfortunately, it’s not.

The good thing about Wet ‘n Wild is the color variety. But their formulation is inconsistent across shades. Which ones did you own?

  6. I had a Wet N Wild lipstick once and didn’t like it at all. It made me not like matte lipsticks from the drugstore until I found the Rimmel ones. elf also makes some really nice matte lip colors in a swivel up stick form that isn’t chubby pencil-like and it’s only $3 USD but I don’t know if they’re available in the Philippines
    :(

I used to like the Revlon Balm Stains as it was the first “lipstick” that stayed on my lips but the stains left behind are nothing like the original color I put on! I had that problem with Honey; it was a nice muted pink but the stain was a bright fuschia, which totally surprised me when it wore off.

  7. Yay! I’m tagged! Haha! Will try to answer this soon! <3 Agree with the Revlon lip products. I'd rather use the classic ones because the new ones are disappointing. :P

  8. Hahaha, I think there’s something wrong with my lip anatomy. Imagine, I can tolerate the driest of all dry-textured lipsticks (mac retro matte and inglot).

Revlon matte slides on my lips even when I don’t eat anything. Parang kelangan ko ata, yung tuggy para maging ok.

  9. Resellers won’t exist if the price was somewhat reasonable. I would be ok with 10% mark up. Just imagine how much a wet
n wild lipstick megalast costs here compared to when you get it in the states. That’s 100% markup, if not more.

  10. Ano bang imported good and hindi overpriced dito sa Philippines? Huhuhu anyway, why don’t you like the matte balms???? Huhuhu for some reason, I do like it a lot (Shameless, I mean) hehe

  11. Thanks for the tag! This was a fun read, but mostly cause I love your thought process. Most feels on #6 (overpriced drugstore products) UGH!!! GROAR!! I hate the large price diff as if naman noh. Kaya nga I secretly giggle when resellers sell at the same price / lower than Rustan’s.. I’m like: GO GIRL! Git that moneh!

  12. I love your answer to the first question! Hahaha. And I agree that most, if not all, US drugstore brands are overpriced here in the Philippines and that sucks big time! Oh and I love Anne Klutz too! :)

What do you think?
