Lush and Summer: Ponche Shower Gel Review

Technically, my first drink was wine because our dad have us drink it every New Year’s eve.

But, my first real drink was in college, at the end of our 2nd year. I can still remember clearly that we drank a bottle of tequila.

My college friends stopped me on my 9th shot because they knew it was my first time and they were worried for me. Only I was far from drunk, my face wasn’t red at all, and I can still walk a straight line.

They said it was beginner’s luck. I say I got it from my father. My dad is not an alcoholic, but he has an unbelievably high alcohol tolerance. Happy belated fathers’ day, Dad.

To this day, I’m still known to many friends as someone who can drink a lot but it’s been a while so I doubt if I still can. Also, I don’t seem to like drinking as much anymore. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older.

Maybe it’s also why Lush Ponche is my least liked scent of all the Lush products I used this summer. It smells like tequila with shots of orange juice. You read that right. It’s not orange juice with shots of tequila, it’s the other way around.

When I saw it in the store, I thought: it’s orange, it must be good. I picked it up without reading the label which says it was inspired by traditional Mexican Christmas Punch.

I have no idea what Mexican Christmas Punch smells like. But according to here (see photo below), it’s supposed to smell like freshly squeezed orange juice, plum and cinnamon infusions, and a good shot of tequila.

Which means this is definitely NOT a summer scent — tequila equals heat…
Maybe I was just expecting a mandarin orange scent, hence the disappointment. I checked reviews online, and they seem to be unanimous in saying that this has a refreshing orange scent that wakes you up in the morning… I disagree.

I associate tequila with a bad hangover and sluggishness the next day. There’s nothing refreshing in that. I was thinking that maybe mine came from a bad batch. After all, Lush products are handmade.

The scent is not bad though, it’s fine really. It’s just not something I get excited about smelling when I’m about to use it.

That being said, I like this shower gel overall.

In fact, despite it being my least liked scent of all shower gels I tried of Lush, it is my favorite shower gel of all. Ironic, I know.

I think it is THE BEST SHAMPOO I have EVER tried — and it’s not even shampoo.

If your hair is dense, straight (or straight-ish), with thick strands, you MUST try this!

I switch shampoos every day. But if I’m planning on a low maintenance hair day and I don’t want to put my hair up in a pony tail, I make sure I use this.

It makes my hair really straight, bouncy, manageable, and 98% frizz-free.

I always get compliments when I use this. People ask me if I flat-ironed my hair or whatever when all I did was wash my hair with this, finger comb, let it air dry, and comb as usual. No special hair techniques needed. REALLY. Sometimes I dry my hair with a fan, but I always end up with the same neatly straight hair.

I get the best results when I wash my hair at night and let my hair air dry. When I wake up in the morning, my hair is shiny, straight and ready to go with just combing it.

I don’t know how this will work for folks with fine and/or wavy hair but maybe you can also give it a try. Please don’t be alarmed if your hair feels knotty-squeaky after washing. That’s normal, my hair doesn’t feel like that when it dries.

I don’t understand why I don’t get the same effect with the other shower gels. Could it be because this one’s not opaque? Recently, I bought Happy Hippy, another Lush clear shower gel to find out.

Anyway, I strongly recommend this shower gel to everyone. Specifically to those who are looking for something not sweet from from Lush.

Price: Php 275 for 100g. Here’s their facebook page for contact info and store list.
