De-stashing Phase 1: Makeup and Skin Care Packing Party

Warning: This article is not for the weak.

I know that relative to many other people, my makeup and skin care collection is NOT big at all. But based on which products I’ve been using lately, I know that many of my stuff can be considered ‘excess’. However, I find it really hard to sort them one by one and decide which ones I’m going to dispose of and which items I will keep.

Taking inspiration from The Minimalists’ Packing Party, I decided to hold a party with myself. The Minimalists did it on a larger scale. They packed everything in the house as if they were moving to another place. After they’ve packed, they unpacked items one by one as they needed them. After a week or so, everything that’s still unpacked was deemed unnecessary and must be disposed of.

When I read their essay, I got excited. Their process was easier than going through each item one by one because chances are, if I do that, I won’t be able to let go of any of my stuff.

Now, let’s get the party started.

First, I went out and bought a bottle of my current favorite alcoholic drink–just so I can call it a party. I limited it to a bottle coz I know I might end up drinking too much if I see what I needed to give away later.

Then, I collected all my makeup and skin care stuff and laid them out on the washer so I can take a picture for inventory’s sake.

I put them all in this tote bag, then I sat in front of my laptop and finished my bottle of Gilbey’s as I wrote about this project.

I’d like to call this The De-stashing Project. I refuse to call it “Decluttering Project” coz the latter means I just have to organize my stuff neatly or hide them in drawers so that our place would look uncluttered. Now, if I “de-stash”, it means I’m really letting go of most of my stuff.

I’ll update in a week to see how this goes. Wish me luck!

  1. I need to destash as well. It's very hard to do it though. When I first read this post several days ago, I got so inspired. However, when I pulled out my skincare/makeup bins, I stopped. Haha. I'll try to do it tomorrow. :) Siguro one product a day? Or 1 product a week? :D

  2. Ha, I've done this! I acted upon 'impulse' and got the job done in about 10 minutes. If I made lists and pondered on which ones to chuck into my trash basket, I knew I would have had 2nd, 3rd, 4th…… thoughts and so on. So I just did it unceremoniously. But this is a good idea!

  3. thats actually a great idea. should try it with clothes! and i love that you even added yourfavorite drink to the mix to turn it more into a party! lol. great job. good luck! :)

  4. Oh boy… this is quite a challenge! Good luck, Rae! I don't think I have the courage to do this. Especially since I keep buying new ones. Haha.

  5. Makes sense. I'll take your suggestion! A little pressured to make a review on any foundation coz I don't usually wear them… But it's coming up!

  6. 2 months? Don't go over two months baka wala ka ng matapon haha. I'm looking at that Shiseido sunstick and Im thinking if you've ever reviewed it. I know you've mentioned it before but can't remember if you've formally laid a verdict on how it fares.

  7. What a cute post, Rae! I have yet to read Joshua and Ryan's page but I'm all excited to see how yours would turn out.

I wonder who goes in the bin after a week. Btw, how long would it be before you consider an item “unnecessary”?

What do you think?
