Dry Skin Weather and My Moisturizer Inventory

Is it just me or is your skin drying out too? (If you’re based in the Philippines, I’m talking to you). I can’t remember last year’s January to be this cold. According to PAG-ASA, yesterday’s temperature ranged from 20 to 28 degrees Celsius. That may be summer in Canada, but in the Philippines, that’s sweater weather.

Earlier today, my friend Kat sent me this SMS:

Rae help. Sooooobrang dry ng fez ko. Do you have suggestions?

Last year, a number of our lunch conversations involved me ranting about my face looking so oily, or her ranting about her face feeling dry.

I can somehow sympathize with her. But this time, I know exactly how she feels. My skin has improved a lot as of this time but during the last 2 weeks, it was like drought came upon my face.

I never dealt with this before. I used to get occasional dryness from using acne topical meds but I usually get the ‘leathery skin with oil on top’ scenario, and never the ‘consecutive days of dry skin devoid of any oil’ type of skin.

For most of the year, I can use just a serum and call it my moisturizer too. That routine isn’t working for me anymore, so I set aside the serums for the slightly heavier ones I’ve been ignoring.

Moisturizer Inventory

Before I show you what I have, let me just tell you how much I love moisturizers– and I don’t use the word love very lightly. I will choose moisturizers over any other beauty product I have. I love moisturizers more than I love lipsticks. I can go out with absolutely no makeup on, but never without a moisturizer. I don’t ever forget. Is that emphasis enough?

I used to have a lot but I already gave many of them away when I started de-stashing. I’m left with 8 (plus sachet samples) which I think is still too much.

Neutrogena and Olay

The 2 above is what I’ve been wearing for most of 2013′s last quarter. I used Neutrogena Fine Fairness Lotion SPF 30++ in the mornings, mixed with L’Oreal Lucent Magique Foundation or BYS Concealer.  At night, I used Olay Brightening Intensive Serum or Andalou Naturals Turmeric + C Enlighten Serum as moisturizers.

For now, I’ll be putting the serums aside for the sample moisturizers I have from Avon (photographed below) and an almost empty sample tube of Andalou Naturals Purple Carrot + C Luminous Night Cream.

Avon Moisturizer

I think that will last me about 3 weeks. If the latter is not moisturizing enough or if I’m done with them, I’ll move on to Olay Men Multi-Solution Revitalising Cream. I used this for about a month last year and then I stopped. I found it too moisturizing for my needs back then (summer), but it’s actually not too heavy. It has the same weight as Olay Age Protect; both are lighter than Olay Total Effects and Olay Regenerist.

Andalou Naturals Purple Carrot

Moisturizer Shopping Ban

I really really REALLY want to buy a full size tub of Andalou Naturals Probiotic + C moisturizer since the day I emptied my sample. But to this day, it’s still not in my grubby hands. You have no idea how much energy I expend every time I go to a mall controlling myself from buying this moisturizer, so please give me a virtual pat on the back.

I vowed never to get another moisturizer until I’m down to two (so I can buy one and have 3). I decided that 3 is a good enough number to limit myself in. Ideally that would compose of one lightweight moisturizer, another one that’s a little bit heavier for dry skin emergencies (such as what happened to me recently), and the third’s an extra for satisfying my fancies.

In the meantime, I have to deal with these first:

Hollywood Style Anti-wrinkle Cream

The one on the front is VMV Re-everything Face and Body Lotion. I had high hopes for this one after reading Eula’s review. But I think I got an expired tube. The label says it’s due to expire in 2015 but mine already smells like dirty, damp laundry left in the washer for weeks. I think the coconut oil in it has gone rancid. I used it on my feet and I didn’t experience any irritation, but I should just throw this away. I lost the receipt so I can’t bring it back anymore.

The one at the back is Hollywood Style Anti-Wrinkle Cream. This was my mom’s but she prefers Olay Regenerist Night Cream. I took it because I’m moisturizer-crazed like that. This one will really test my ability to delay gratification (Andalou Naturals Probiotic + C = gratification). The tube is 150 ml. — longer than my hand and wider than my 4 fingers together. I have a feeling I’ll end up cheating by using this as a hand cream too.

Maxi-peel Exfoliant Cream

What I failed to photograph is Maxipeel Exfoliant Cream. I bought it out of curiosity. My brother asked me to buy 12 tubes of these to bring with him to the US for his girlfriend. So, I was like O.O — I should get myself a tube too. I used it for 2 weeks but I forgot about it. It was not bad, I just got distracted.

How I Deal With Dry Skin Weather

Going back to my dry skin, it was fixed by a Watsons brand sheet mask and 2 consecutive days of using Laneige Water Sleeping Essence (I have a sachet sample that I used as a mask). I got the mask idea from Sabs’ One-Week Sheet Mask Challenge.

My face is now back to normal.

No, wait.  My skin is not yet back to its normal oily self — it is literally “normal.”

I’m not sure if masking will work for dry skinned people but it’s worth a try. The Watsons brand sheet mask is currently at a promo rate of 2 for Php 59. Try it and tell me how it goes.

  1. Wow, you are moisturiser-crazy! Haha! Up until a few days ago, I only had one (vmv hydrabalance) then I bought an Avalon Organics one which I’m scared to use because it has lavender oil. I should have read reviews before buying it. Anyway, I saw the Andalou one and thought of you! Should have bought that one instead. Tsk

    • Oo nga daw. Photo-toxic daw ang lavender oil. Maybe just use it as a night cream. I once used a sunblock with lavender oil and my skin got clusters of whitehead-like itchy rashes that eventually became pimple-like.

  2. And here I was, thinking “hm isn’t that amazing. My face isn’t oily anymore! HOORAY! I finally found a product that works!” And then here you are with this post, and now I’m like “maybe it’s the weather huhuhuhuhu”. Oh you! Hahaha well, my face isn’t “normal” or dry but it’s not as oily as it was a few months ago. And I am going gaga over moisturizers too! I’ve been meaning to get my hands on the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil Free Gel Cream ever since I ran out of the sample. But it’s sooooo expensive at Php1,700 a tub :((

  3. I bought the Shiseido Ibuki sample set with cleanser, softening lotion and refining moisturizer, and so far so good.

The refining moisturizer is amazing! I usually feel the need to exfoliate 2-3x a week because of rough patches on my face, but ever since I used the Ibuiki refining moisturizer, no rough patches at all. I’ll be buying the full size when I run out and will also be getting the day moisturizer. I’m still undecided with the softening lotion though because I’m not convinced of its efficacy.

    • I tried sample sachets of the softening concentrate, used it for 6 consecutive days and I can’t see if it added anything to the rest of the skin care stuff I’m using.

Will wait for your review of this. It’s way cheaper than the white lucent moisturizer I’ve been wanting to buy for so long.

Yung day moisturizer, were you referring to the one with SPF?

      • Yup. The SA said the refining moisturizer is for nighttime use, while the one with SPF is for day. I’m thinking of buying both day and night moisturizers locally since I compared the prices online and the price difference is very negligible.

But I have a new dream skin brand, have you heard of Tatcha? After Ibuki, I’m trying out the Tatcha sampler set.

      • Yes! Meron silang product that I really want to get. Yung face brightener. Parang highlighter spray na instant glow daw. Sa skin care products wala pa ako masyadong nababasa. But I really want that spray/ mist thing.

  4. I’m actually breaking out due to overdryness so now I’ve incorporated moisturizer in my AM routine. It’s not that I don’t need it, I’m just too lazy for skincare in the AM. Not really particular or obsessed with my brands as much as I obsess over application. I have a specific method and I feel bad if I rush through or completely disobey it :P

    • Ako din may particular way of putting on a moisturizer haha. Massage until it somehow ‘disappears’. Kaya I can’t deal with too much creamy products in the morning. If it’s sunblock yun na yun. Currently, I’m mixing 2/3s Neutrogena 1/3 Foundation on the back of my hand and I apply it the way I do my moisturizer.

  5. Aww sayang, would ask pa naman a review on VMV as I’ve read nice reviews about it. I’m also curious on Hollywood’s. For maxipeel, I’m really afraid to try anything from the brand, I’ve seen some girls na nasunog, mali siguro yung product na ginamit nila.

    • Yung maxipeel exfoliant cream, it was not like the maxipeel solution/ astringent. The latter’s active ingredient is tretinoin and hydroquinone, while the exfoliant cream is glycolic acid. I didn’t experience any type of peeling though, and I’m using the highest strength. Feeling ko parang cheaper version sya nung mga AHA or BHA cream, like those from Paula’s Choice or yung mga glycolic acid cream ng VMV.

I will try to use it for consecutive nights until I finish the whole tube.
